What is D-dimer?
D-dimer is a small protein fragment released when a blood clot breaks down. D-dimer tests are used in dogs as a screening tool for conditions involving abnormal blood clotting, like Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) or thromboembolic disease (TED), including pulmonary embolism (PE). Elevated levels indicate fibrin formation and breakdown, but they aren't specific, meaning high levels can occur with various issues like cancer, surgery, or inflammation, so results are interpreted alongside clinical signs and other tests, with low D-dimer often helping rule out clots.
When the body is under stress from things like infection, trauma, or a difficult delivery, it may start forming and breaking down tiny blood clots.
D-dimer is what shows up in the blood when that’s happening. What does D-dimer tell a breeder?
Think of D-dimer as an early warning light 🚨
Low / normal D-dimer
The body is recovering normallyHigh D-dimer
Something more serious may be going on and should be checked by a vetWhy is this helpful for breeders?
Helps catch hidden complications after whelping
Useful when a dam:
Seems tired or off
Isn’t eating normally
“Just doesn’t look right”
Supports deciding when to call the vet sooner rather than waiting
Gives peace of mind when results are normal
When do breeders typically use it?
After a hard delivery or C-section
If recovery doesn’t feel “normal”
When they want objective reassurance, not guesswork!!!!!
To summarize:
D-dimer is a blood test that helps indicate whether the body may be dealing with a serious internal problem after delivery or illness.
